The Academy versus Babel is the first in a series of ten books which, under the title Criticism of Literary Reason. Philosophical Materialism as Literary Theory expounds a thought system for interpreting literary materials (author, work, reader and transducer). The Spanish version, La Academia contra Babel, was published in 2006.


JESÚS G. MAESTRO

Jesús G. Maestro (Ph.D. University of Oviedo, 1993) is currently associate professor of Literary Theory and Comparative Literature at University of Vigo (Spain).

He is the author of several books, including Idea, concepto y método de la literatura comparada (2008), Los materiales literarios. La reconstrucción de la Literatura tras la esterilidad de la "teoría literaria" posmoderna (2007), Los venenos de la literatura. Idea y Concepto de la Literatura desde el Materialismo Filosófico (2007), Las ascuas del Imperio. Crítica de las Novelas ejemplares de Cervantes desde el materialismo filosófico (2007), El concepto de ficción en la literatura (2006), La Academia contra Babel (2006), El mito de la interpretación literaria (2004), La secularización de la tragedia. He is editor of Theatralia (1996) and Anuario de Estudios Cervantinos (2005).

Jesús G. Maestro has translated several works by Tadeusz Kowzan and Wladimir Krysinski into Spanish, as well as a number of English, French and Italian articles on literary theory.

Furthermore, he has served as Visiting Professor or Visiting Scholar at several universities in Europe (Mons, Caen, Bochum, Varsovia, Cracovia, Lublin), Canada (Montreal), and the United States (Texas A&M University, University of Virginia, and Vanderbilt University).

Since 2002 he has also served as the managing editor of Biblioteca Crítica de las Literaturas Luso-Hispánicas, published by Ediciones Clásicas & Ediciones del Orto in colaboration with the University of Minnesota, and edited by Anthony N. Zahareas, Hernán Vidal, Teresa M. Vilarós, Beatriz Pastor, Russell Hamilton, José Esteban and Rodolfo Cardona.

He currently works on Philosophical Materialism as a Theory of Literature.
